Calls To Action – 3/28/2019

FEDERAL:

Trump Wants to Cut Funding for the Special Olympics:
If you haven’t heard Trump’s Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos (R-Education Griftopia) is leading the charge on some massive cuts to education programs for children with disabilities and special needs. She offered a budget proposal that would zero out the $18 million dedicated to funding the Special Olympics. She also stated that Trump’s education budget would cut $51 million for programs for autistic children, and there would also be draconian cuts to education programs for the blind. Overall, the Trump budget would cut education spending by $7 billion. This would include cuts to Pell Grants, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and other vital programs that help students succeed. These cuts are incredibly cruel, and while the House would never allow most of these cuts to go through, we need to make sure Congress hears about it.

Hello, my name is ____________ and I am a constituent from zip code _____________. I am calling today to urge Rep. ____________ to oppose any cuts in education spending. The cuts to the Special Olympics and to programs that work with autistic children are incredibly cruel and short-sighted. In addition to the actual athletic competition, the Special Olympics also supports programs that promote inclusion and that prevent bullying. Please vote against any cuts to the Special Olympics. Thank you.

Support the For the People Act:
The For the People Act is the Senate companion to HR 1, the Democrats’ sweeping election reform bill. Like the House bill, The For the People Act would set up a public campaign finance reform system, implement redistricting reform for federal elections to curb gerrymandering, and implement same-day registration. All 47 Democrats have signed on to the bill, but so far Mitch McConnell (R-Dante’s 7th Circle) has not only refused to bring the bill up for a vote but has also openly mocked it. Let’s make Tillis and Burr defend McConnell’s anti-democratic posturing.

Hello, my name is ____________ and I am a constituent from zip code _____________. I am calling today to urge Sen. _______________ to support the For the People Act. This bill would ensure that our elections are competitive and that all eligible voters would be able to register to vote easily. In particular, it would curtail gerrymandering, which has been a huge issue here in North Carolina. Please support the For the People Act. Thank you.

STATE:

Oppose a Legislation that Would Require Medicaid Recipients to Work:
The NC Senate is proposing legislation that would require Medicaid recipients to work unless they meet certain conditions (disability, elderly, etc.). Similar legislation in Arkansas and Kentucky was just ruled unconstitutional, but they’re going to try to pass it anyway. If you have a GOP senator, call them and bother their legislative assistant. If you have a Democratic senator, they probably already oppose it, so it’s OK not to call.

Hello, my name is ____________ and I am a constituent from zip code _____________. I am calling today to urge Sen. ____________ to oppose SB 387, which would require Medicaid recipients to work. Similar legislation has been ruled unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court, and such a bill will not help the state’s most vulnerable citizens. Please oppose it. Thank you.

Oppose Anti-Immigration HB 370:
House Bill 370 would require sheriffs to share the information of any person that *may* be undocumented with ICE. This bill would make our communities less safe by driving undocumented further into the shadows. Reports from NC Policy Watch’s Melissa Broughton have suggested that there is very little public support for this bill, while massive coalitions led by the NC NAACP among other groups oppose it. It’s especially urgent to call your Rep if he/she is a Republican.

Hello, my name is ____________ and I am a constituent from zip code _____________. I am calling today to urge Sen. ____________ to oppose HB 370, which would require sheriffs to share information about anyone they suspect to be an undocumented resident. This bill would be incredibly harmful and would likely make our communities less safe. Please oppose HB 370. Thank you.
