Kids Rising: Standing Up For Families at the Border – Asheville
August 24 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm EDT
Our monthly meeting for August has been transformed into a kid-focused family-friendly event, as we join with two other local grassroots groups, Stronger Together WNC-North and Madison County Indivisible, to protest the unjust, inhumane, and often downright illegal treatment of refugees at our southern border. Recognizing that children hear and see what’s going on in the news and that hearing about the mistreatment of children and families can be upsetting, “Kids Rising” will focus on offering comfort and solace by helping kids process this disturbing situation through writing and art, with the goal of empowering them to express their feelings and stand up for families at the border.
Card-writing and art stations will be set up in the auditorium, with pre-addressed, stamped postcards available for kids to write to the President, to their Senators, or to their Representative in Congress. We will also be creating a large banner of children’s art, for those who’d like to participate in this way.
Parents will also have an opportunity to write their own cards and letters, and adults without kids will have a separate space available for letter-writing if they prefer a quieter space. Fact sheets, postcards, stationery and stamps will be provided.
Join us for our first kid-focused event! Everyone is welcome.
