Voting Rights Hearing & Reception – Raleigh
June 12 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT
UPDATED DATE: JUNE 12th
Please join HQ NAACP, the Racial Equity Anchors Collaborative, and the Raleigh-Apex NAACP for a People’s Hearing & Reception on June 12 at 6:00 to showcase the need for additional voting rights protections for America’s most disenfranchised.
The NAACP is collecting narratives and information about what voting is like for many Americans in the United States. In 2013, the Supreme Court invalidated the formula used to fight voter discrimination in the case “Shelby v. Holder”. Previously, areas with a history of voter discrimination had to seek a clearance before changing voting rules that could affect nonwhites.
Within days of the “Shelby” decision being announced, NC lawmakers passed a voting law that restricted North Carolinian’s access to voting in several ways. Judges later found that this NC law discriminated against “African Americans with almost surgical precision”.
Sheila E. Isong, national political director for civic engagement at the NAACP, is coming to North Carolina to listen to stories and build the record to provide progressive change.
We will also hear from NAACP leaders, elected officials, and impacted North Carolina voters.
There will be a reception after the program.
