WXII: N.C. A&T campus in middle of gerrymandering debate; Students push for redistricting

Students at North Carolina A&T University are in the middle of a debate over gerrymandering. The campus is split into two separate congressional districts.

Congressman Mark Walker represents half of the students on campus, Congressman Ted Budd represents the other half – both are conservative Republicans.

Roughly three dozen students and faculty gathered on the steps of Gibbs Hall on campus to illustrate how the current districts diminish their voting rights, and urge the U.S. Supreme Court to restore them.

The high court on Tuesday was hearing more than two hours of arguments in two cases involving the issue of gerrymandering. The first case involves North Carolina’s heavily Republican congressional map, and the second involves a map drawn by Democrats in Maryland.
